Wuhu Sanshan Port, a joint venture between Keppel Telecommunications & Transportation (Keppel T&T) and Sinotrans Ltd, successfully completed its maiden trial unloading on 25 January 2013 for Phase 1 of the project. The port will be one of the largest inland grade one river ports in Anhui Province when it turns fully operational in 2014.
During the trial, a 10,000-dwt barge, fully loaded with iron ore, was unloaded. The load was then successfully conveyed, via a purpose-built material transfer and receiving system to one of Wuhu Sanshan Port's key customers, Wuhu Xinxing Ductile Iron Pipes, which is located beside the port.
GM of Wuhu Sanshan Port, Mr Au Yong Kong Seng said, "To achieve smooth operations, we exercised great caution in every detail and ensured that necessary resources, such as the quay cranes, ship unloaders, skid loaders, manpower, utility supply, remote surveillance system and conveyor system, were in good working condition."
Alongside the preparations and execution of the trial run, the team had to simultaneously manage the wharf operations as well as oversee the construction of the main storage yard area and auxiliary facilities.
With a land area of 553,000 sm and four 10,000-dwt berths, the port will have an annual handling capacity of more than seven million tonnes, serving China's central region. 400 job opportunities are expected to be created from the project.
This project is Keppel T&T's second partnership with Sinotrans Group, with their first being Lanshi Port, a river port along the Pearl River, in Foshan, Guangdong Province. Apart from port operations, Wuhu Sanshan Port will offer integrated logistics services such as international freight forwarding, bonded warehousing, customs declaration and other third party logistics services.
